I suspect I have an issue with my rear differential making a noise when under load, am I ok to remove the rear drive shaft and drive to see if the noise stops, if it does and I will then pull the differential ?

Could check the lube in it, see if it has 'particles' or a hand full of oats ...

Ok I removed the rear drive shaft and I can turn the rear differential about a quarter turn without the rear wheels moving but no other play noticed. Is this normal ?

1/4 turn is erring on the side of a 'bit much' but it's not excessive...
How did you get on with the rear shaft off ?

Could not get the shaft removed from the gearbox end, need to get it up on stands so I can turn the shaft. Going to have a go tomorrow. But I fixed the hand break when I was under there so some progress made !

One wheel up in the air (unwieghted) and the high/low box (LT230) in neutral and you can turn the shaft easily.
