Evening all!

Brandy new to Landy Land so bear with me.

Just bought my first Landy, Defender 90 1997. Luv it!

I got it through a friend of the family at a good price and new the history so bought it without too many questions asked.

However now that I have it I'm not sure whether its a 200TDI or a 300 TDI. How can I tell? Checked out the VIN number on a few sites but wasn't getting anywhere. Is there something obvious in the engine compartment that I can tell by looking at?

This is probably a silly question but I'm jumin' in anyway!

this is a 300tdi, however yours may have the black manifold cover on it still, but under it, it will look like this.

Cheers, it does have the black cover on it, I'll check it in the AM.

Which is better the 200 or the 300 or is that a whole seperate thread??:)

bout the same really in a defender the 300tdi has slightly more power cos it is slightly restricted in a 200.

200tdi is easier to work on etc but bit louder 300 tdi is quieter but a little bit more complex and slightly more fuel consumption.

Thanks folks. I can confirm based on the information you've given me it is a 300TDI. :)
I have alot more questions to ask but not sure where I should start??

I need to change the rear crossmember cross. How big a job is that?

i had to change the rear crossmember on my 90, took it down a garage run by a friend and did most of the work myself but he cut the old one off with an oxycet torch and did the welding on the new one.

not a bad job, just make sure u dont set fire to the wiring loom like we did!

this website is pretty helpful

Thanks Chris. That web site was a big help. Now I know what I'm letting myself in for

I have additional questions about breather pipes for the 300i, I guess I should open up another thread? Do I close this one down?

you cant close this one down so starting a new thread will get you more hits and more help. i suggest doing a search on here for breather pipes 1st. i posted one a while back about getting yourown DIY setup. its cheap as chips that way. try "DIY breathers" in the search tab at the top.
