Hi guys,

Hsd MOT last thursday, failed on centre exhause and back box

However, only cost £38 for the silencer and £51 for the centre pipe

When the garage owner rung me friday morning to pick it up he told me on the phone that my diff mounts had play and could do with changing.. but it didnt affect the MOT test..

When i finished work and piced it up, the owner had gone home, so i couldnt dig deeper on the subject..

Ive looked at old threads on here to try and find out the beef, but could someone enlighten me as to how much this should cost and how hard it is to do? The guy at the counter in the garage said off the top of his head the parts are about £80 and an hours labour to do it as its something to do with rear subframe removal??

On an old (2008) thread on here, a member called bippie said after he changed his mounts, the benifits were enormous?? Could someone tell me in what way the benifits are seen or felt?

I didnt want to reopen that thread as it 4 years old, and all the members on it have no recent activity on their landyzone accounts?

right, either im avin a blonde moment or im thick.. Still got no idea if the price the garage quoted me is right, but it does like like you may be able to do it without touching the subframe?

Ive just got a spanner set and a trolley jack and a driveway full of stone chippings.. so i dont see it as a job i can do myself..

Most importantly, whats this "difference" im supposed to be noticing? My hippo drives the same today as it has for the last 2 years? No bangs knocks or anything coming from the back? towing or not....

I have over the last 4 weeks developed a knock from the left rear wheel at around 5mph on full lock.. is this related?

the price is ok as a set can cost between £40-50

if it drives the same it should be ok as well.

the knock on yer rear wheel could be anything.

An hours labour is very fair for changing all three! If you are half capable they aren't difficult to do. Mine were knackered and it made a huge difference, how much difference depends on how knackered they are! Garages don't buy from eBay and make a little on parts too so to me it sounds like a good price for a garage

Im probaably just being thick, especially as i have a stinking hangover after attending a friends 40th last night.. Always appreciate your help and advice... and your signiure

DD - thanks for that.

They guy is generally good as gold, and never rips people off. I just wanted to know if its something i could do myself and if it was something i need to attend to urgently as i like to keep the hippo tip top.

Im pretty capable and will have a crack at anything.. but considering i have no garage, limited tools at home (except the wife!!) and a tight drive with stone chippings, i dont mind chucking about £120ish the garages way to do it..

my rear front mount broke 18 months ago and i haven't got round to doing it yet(mainly cos i've been fighting fires with everything else) so no rush

the best method i've seen for changing them involves removing the centre bolt from all three, this gives enough room to extract and replace the front one, without undoing the subframe.
you would need two correct size spanners or sockets and a trolley jack to support the diff.
it would also be a very good idea to do it off ramps or wooden blocks a la Hippo

The front ones the easy one you can do it all with a basic socket set and a couple of spanners, if you do the back ones undo all of them to remove then put them all back loosely before doing up! You have to wiggle the diff around

Im off aroun france for 3 weeks at the startof November.. I know its a while away, but itll have to be done by then.. If the weather holds (wait for laughter) i MAY give it a crack.. otherwise ill let the garage do it..

Standard replacements do you think?? Or are these polybush ones "the daddy"?

I did polly bushes they are much harder to fit than standard ones! But seem to work well!

i'm putting standards back in mine

cos i've already got em and they put less strain on everything cos they take the shock out of the system
