Having recently bought a bog standard and unmodified low mileage ‘01 TD5 id like to re-connect the diff lock, so do I go electrically operated or manual, your thoughts please.

re-connect??? so it was once connected then disconnected by the PO??? 2001 modell might not have the "hardware" for that, are you sure you have what to "re-connect"? if the TB has the diff-lock spigot and working with a a spanner you are the only man who can decide how to actuate it important is to lock/unlock on command no matter how
 
Ok,so my question was somewhat ambiguous ,the car has never had a means of engaging the diff lock, fit a manual lever or an electronic servo?

IMO my answer was not ambiguous at all but i'll try to clarify :
if the TB has the diff-lock spigot and working... (which you didnt mention) you are the only man who can decide how to actuate it important is to lock/unlock on command no matter how
