Hi my first post on forum. I have a 2001 2.5 diesel p38. With auto box. When I start the engine it runs at 2500 rpm. No slower!. When scanned it reports engine speed sensor faulty. Although when looking at live data the crank signal output matches the needle lift sensor speed. The intake air sensor reports -38 degrees. But I can't find temp sensor?. Garage diagnosed it as suspect engine ecu. Used ecu fitted fault as before. If you attempt to put it into gear to move, it engine dies imediatly. Finally no rpm readout on dash.
Any help or ideas greatfully received.

Change the crank position sensor, but firstly check wiring to it. if you change it, remove it from the bracket and fit new one. DO NOT remove bracket or you need a special tool to reset it's position. -38.38 degrees is a preset in the ECU to ensure EGR operation. There will be no rev counter if the crank sensor that feeds it is duff. The engine is getting it's speed readings from number four injector. It is normal for engine to run at elevated speeds when CPS fails. Is the MIL lamp on?
