Given the cold weather I got to thinking (you can probably hear me and it hurts:D).

My Rangie DT takes what I consider a normal length of time with the glowplugs on to start (based on other diesels I've owned/driven), yet the 18 month old Kia (Spit!,Spit!) company pool car starts first time without any heating at all! What is it that the newer car does differently to enable this and can it be done to my DT?

It's called direct injection. My Trannie starts first turn without waiting for the glowplugs unless it is very cold. My previous Transit didn't even have glowplugs as far as I recall. Some Jap cars also have fast start glowplugs.

The BMW lump was old technology even when it was new useing indirect injection and a pre-combustion chamber, but then BMW don't have diesel experience.

so whats wrong with waiting 15 sec gosh u must be very impatient lol
yea the old york engines used in tranny mk2 to mk5 wer very good engines started instant and didnt have glow plugs
