Hi folks,
First post, have a problem with my '98 2.0 Xedi hippo..(Who hasn't?) Whenever the vehicle is cold, she is a right pig to start, taking upto 20 secs to fire, with a big cloud of white smoke on starting. When she's warm, no probs, fires on first turn of the key, but whenever the temp drops below the 9 o'clock line, she's a pain again...All glow plugs replaced, fuel pump replaced( with one out a rover 820d) all other bits check out ok on the diagnostics...Any ideas? *EDIT* Forgot to say, on occasion the bleed pump thingy can be squashed i.e. not hard...Could this be a pinprick in the fuel pipes a la disco?

I'm changing the fuel filter(again) this week, so I'll see if this time it does owt, didn't make any difference last time...:( Silly question, I'll go with the airlock, but why should it then start ok when warm? (not dissin', just thick/curious..) Could just be because she's old and kernackered, 140k on the clock poor cow..Drivers window and sunroof both duf at this moment, gonna try the wire & screw trick at the same time as the fuel filter swop...

It is maybe cos yer chase through ya air lock with turns from ya starter ya fuel gets ignited and tickatty boo, when ya stop the air is still there and so the cycle returns, you can also have air in the high pressure side but this would be very unlikely as it would never start, follow the book to get rid of the air lock and you will always be a Ming follower,best oh luck. . .:) :) :)

Hi Casybai - Tiny had this peoblem last year - chances are it yer relay situated behind the battery.;) It may test ok but not conduct the current well enough. Get some miles in!!!:D
 
Posted this on oldest hippo thread..we're crossing about a bit, have it here as well :p

HAHA, found the bleeder(the relay that is). We've got an old metro in our yard from slice up practice, the relays are the same numbers, have swopped them for no change at the mo:( . I'll see what a fuel filter change does for it. Ming, I've bled the air out the current filter, but still not playing...better not be the HP fuel line...:(

i used to have a montego with the same engine in it and it suffered the same problem, it turned out to be a gauze filter in the top of the lift pump, accesssed by as small screw on the top, i don't know if its the same on rthe gaylander but i'm only trying to help ;)

Yep the Yella thing sounds good but gettin back to yer squeeze thing ,it should squeeze up hard so somthing not right, dont worry bout high pressure side as ya can bleed that read ya manwell ,but doubt its that as the motor would be running rough. . .best oh luck. . .:)

Yep, it never really gets rock hard, still stays a bit floppy..the squeeze thing is the same..:p

I'll give it the bleed from hell when I swop the fuel filter over, I'm wondering if the floppy squeezey is a leak in down a fuel hose somewhere..Yella, can you tell me a bit more about the lift pump gauze jobby, is that the pump in the tank you're on about?

I swapped my relay for the one sat next to it (same numbers) even pulled it apart and all seemed brand new but it just did not conduct enough current for some reason. Upped it to a 70 amp jobbie and now fires up 1st time with no smoke...I would be tempted to get the multimeter out ya know.

Tiny, I think I'll have a word with the nice chappy at Halfords tomorrow and see if he's got any 40amp relays in amongst the subwoofers and bikes...

Well, filters in, used the squeezy thingy as per heinz manuwel, all the stuff about revving, got it hard, then went floppy in about a minute...squeezy thing as well..:p

I'll wait til the beast is cold and try it again...Squeezy job as well..:p

Have I milked this enough yet?

(Need summat to stop me doing a Basil on it......:(
 
INNUENDO ALERT

After fitting a new filter I pump mine until it gets hard, however it soon goes soft after a few mins. I wouldn't worry about it - happens to the best of us...;)

 
:mad: BASTAD FOOKIN GAYLANDER ****E! Filter changed, squeezy pumped hard (That lines dead, not going there any more...), even found a 70amp relay for the plug jobby, still 20sec turnover when cold, still white fooken smoke, still ok when warm.

Next step then.........:confused:

I'll have a look at YellaDisco's gauze filter to eliminate that un, after that next step is probably to swop all the fuel pipes, unless someone else has any ideas....

This cow has so far over the last 2 years been to 3 main dealers, 2 non franchised 'specialists' and my local heinz 57 garage, 3 sets of glowplugs, 1 rebuild and 1 second hand fuel pump later AND SHE'S STILL A STROPPY COW!

Oh dear calm down calm down, i er am running outa idea's on this one ,but here is a shot in the dark that caught me out a few years ago, check that you have a good earth on the engine as them glow plugs pull a lot of umph, also the cables to them are all well connected and no excess volt drop, come on all more help needed lets put this one ta bed, lr guy your needed. . . :confused:
