If you drive on slippery ground a locked diff will be quite noticeable.Best is to put one side on a rock or suchlike and the other side on grass or ice is even better.Pull away sharply and with an unlocked diff youll get plenty of wheelspin on one side.Locked you wont.If you cant drive it you may be able to see the diff carrier through the oil filler or drain hole try a torch and dentists mirror. The carriers look totally different.Ive often had ARBs but found them fiddly thinking about detroit cos they are so simpleJust looking at an advert for another landy which says it has a detroit locker in the rear but no way of proving this. Is there a simple test that you can do with to test whether it has one or not, thanks
ive got a detroit locker in rear of my 90,there really good as you just fit & forget, the easiest way to check your possible new motor if its got one in is jack both rear wheels of the ground (hand brake of & front wheels chocked) spin one wheel by hand,if its a normal open diff the other wheel will spin the opposite way,if its a detroit locker the opposite wheel will spin the same way and you will hear the locker click as it engages
personally ive had no trouble/uneven tyre wear on the roads, ive had it in about 4 month now,i find it engages more when in diff lock as you allways got drive to one rear wheel which obviously will engage the locker, probably the only thing i have noticed is pulling out of a junction fast or hitting a roundabout hard on a wet road, cos it locks up the rear you tend to get a slight bit of understeer on the front end which im going to sort by installing a detroit truetrac lsd in the fronttell us more mate.Do you notice any ill effects on tarmac.I would love to get one but concerned about the road handling cos itow alot
