Right, it goes like this. Last few weeks I've been converting my 300tdi/lt77 to a full factory spec 300/def r380, and as part of the job, I've decided to ditch the disco transfer box I originally had, and go for a proper defender version. I managed to find a 40k mile def td5 box for a steal, did as much homework as I could, and bought it.
So far all has gone well until tonight. Under the magical light of my rapidly dying head torch, my last job before a hot shower was to remove the electric speedo transducer and fit the cable, but the square drive on the cable is a lot smaller than the female square in the box. Is there different speedo cables between 200 and 300 vehicles? Mine left the factory as a 200, and I think the cable is probably original.
Can anyone who's done the td5 box into early vehicle have a look at these poor pictures and see what you all think please?

TD5 is electronic so it does'nt have a cable.

You just need to replace the electonic sender with your cable take off .

Yes mate, I know that, that's what I was doing in the pictures, but my existing cable is a lot smaller than the drive within the transfer box. Hence why I'm puzzled

will his orig speedo take the larger size?

edit: err nm, got myself confused ;)

On hang on you've confused me now, I was thinking that frc3310 was a later speedo cable? So as I stand at this minute, I have 200tdi dash and clocks, 200tdi speedo cable, and defender td5 transfer box. Is it the drive in the box I need to change, or are later cables made with a larger square drive that will fit straight in?

Oh and I'm running 265/75/16 bfg km2 tyres, which I was under the impression are pretty much standard defender size with regards to rolling radius? Is it fairly straight forward changing the drive in the box?

Just swap what was driving your cable from your old transfer box into the TD5 box.

all defender speedo cables are the same its only drive that varies between cable and transducer

Yeah I will I think, I'll whip out the old unit from the disco box and see if it's a blue one. The more I've googled this evening I'm amazed how many people don't know about the square drive differences. Loads of threads about td5 dash conversions, but not one of them mentions the existing drive peg being too small to receive the td5 transducer. Is there colored options of drive gear available to suit the larger pegged transducer? Again, loads of info regarding cable drive gears but very little on the td5 stuff. That's just me getting carried away with irrelevant research though.

You don't have to worry about "square drive differences" because when you lever out your old transducer from your old Disco box it comes out as one unit with the cog drive !

Yes I realise that, I'm merely saying how many people carrying out dash conversions don't realise there is actually a difference in square drives from a td5 transducer to a traditional cable drive.
