I have now had a chance to do some measuring.
By way of a reminder, My "90" is an "R" registration 300 Tdi station wagon. The registration date was the 1st of January 1998. Thus it's a late 300 Tdi Defender 90. It has discs all round, with a multi-circuit master cylinder which has 3 pipes coming off it. Each front calliper is four-piston and has one hose going to it. There is one hose to the rear axle which feeds both callipers. It does not have ABS.
There is no evidence, and I have no reason to suspect, that the axles on the vehicle are not original. Thus I assume that it left Solihull with the axles that are on it.
Here are the measurements.
Front axle
Gap between brackets where the radius arms (hockey sticks) attach: 54mm.
Width of the radius arms where they fit between the brackets: 44mm.
Rear axle
Gap between brackets where the radius arm rod ends attach: 62mm.
Width of the radius arm rod ends where they fit between the brackets: 57mm.
I have also measured the donor axles which are in my garage being cleaned, together with their front and rear radius arms. All dimensions are the same as those above.
Based on the serial numbers of the donor axles, I think that it's very likely that they are Disco axles. They had the ABS segmented wheels on the front hubs, but the front callipers, which are four piston, only have one hose connection.
I have read elsewhere that later Defenders had wider radius arms as per the Disco. Thus it would seem that my "90" has these later, wider, radius arms.
Overall, it would appear that the donor axles (very likely Disco) will fit my Defender 90 without trouble.
Thanks again for all the help and suggestions. I'm getting there slowly!
