Browsing the web as you do, ive heard that discovery 1 swivel balls are 7 bolt fitment and defenders are 6 bolt.

So i checked my 1995 300tdi defender 90 to see how many bolts i had mounting the swivel ball to the axle. There are 7! Does this mean i have a discovery Axle?

Ive just ordered new radius arm bushes to fit next week. If it is a discovery axle, are they not going to fit?

6 bolts was early rrc,and you wont find many axles with them on ,300tdi disco and defender front axles are basically the same thing only brakes and the odd bracket vary

Sorry to hijack this thread but are disco 200tdi and 300tdi rear axles the same as i am looking to buy one for my 1988 90 2.5td ( 200tdi ) soon to convert to rear disc brakes but unsure which one i need

early 200 will have imperial caliper securing bolts and longer stub axles hubs etc

if disco rear axle replaces the std salisbury on a 110 load capability and prop length differ, salisbury diff nose is longer, rear spring plates are larger for 110

I hope it's OK re re-open this tread, because I have a similar question regarding axle identification and rather than start a new thread, I thought it better to post on here.

I own a 1998 Defender 90 300Tdi station wagon. It has disc brakes front and rear. The axles and diffs are getting tired (130,000 miles) so I am building some replacements. I have some new diffs from Nigel Parker at Xcess 4x4 incorporating Ashlockers and other upgrades. I have also obtained a pair scrap axles to re-build which I assume were off the same donor vehicle, either a defender or a Disco. I suspect the latter. The front had ABS wheels and both have anti-roll bar brackets. My Defender doesn't have anti-roll bars or ABS.

The axle serial numbers are in the expected locations and are formed of punched dots. After some cleaning and scraping, I can make them out. The front is 71L64732A. The rear is partially lost in corrosion, but is 46S2590??. The latter two digits appear to be E and P. The rear is an LR axle, not a Salisbury.

Another thread on here suggests that 71P is a disco axle code. I cannot find a reference to 46P. Neither appear on a list of Defender axle codes which I found on www.lrworkshop.com. This points to both being off a Disco

Please can anyone advise whether a "46P" axle is off a Defender of a Disco?

Also, will I have any problems fitting these axles to my Defender?

Many thanks!

Radius arms are wider on the disco, measure between the brackets on both axles.
