hiya
my friend cooked his 2005 90 td5 and drove it till it stoped, whn i put water in it it was just running in2 the sump and thot the gasket had went and it was running in2 the bores and as he had cooked it the rings would b knackered hence the reason it was running in2 the sump!!
so i pulled the head off it and popped the pistons out, 2 wer shot, so replaced thm got the head skimmed and new gaskets etc and put it back together, it started no problem an ran fine ticking over, so went to take it a run was coming back in the road and the guage went sky high, towed it back in, oil levels high again an a nightmare 2 start, if you fill the header tank an leave it for the nite an check in the morning the water levels went down! do you think the heads cracked and filling bores??? PLEASE HELP:)

If he was stupid enough to drive it until "it stoped", it's a total strip. you can't guess this one - could be the head, block, crankshaft etc etc....

The Td5 is not a simple engine, it's covered in electronics to advise you that there's a major problem. To my mind it should then stop and interrogate the driver as to whether he is a total moron and wishes to restart.

Modern engines deliver more power/torque and fuel economy because the design parameters are honed to a very fine point, and they tell you when they can't cope. Ignore it at the driver's cost.

thats what am sayin mate i have stripped it an put 2 new pistons in it and it wa sgoin fine till i took it a run then it stared overheating a gain an its using water, a think the head might be cracked??

If water is getting into the sump so quickly that you can be certain that is what's happening there are a few possibilities:-

1 Head gasket

2 Cracked head

3 Cracked block

Can you describe what was wrong with the pistons you changed? Damage to the crowns, holes? Or seized, damaged rings?

they had started to seize on the bore and knackered the piston rings an 2 pistons wer knackerd, i reckon the head must be cracked, a shood of sent it away to get checked when it was off! :(

Well, if it's overheat, and you have indications of piston seize, either the pistons got too big, the bores were forced too small, or both.

Do you know, for sure, that it was an overheat problem to start with? Seized pistons are more often connected with lack of oil.

But, assuming it's water. the early evidence points to a piston/cylinder problem. Not Head. Without experience of the Td5, I'd take that and say that there is a block problem.

Could be the cylinder liners have shifted in the block due to the piston seizure.
If thats the case then you need a new block as the liners supposedly (according to Haynes) can not be changed, bored, honed, or glaze busted in any way.

Am I correct in saying that if you didn't get the head pressure tested you didn't get it skimmed either? That being the case it could be warped.
