Just a quick one guys, looking for opinions on which shocks you've all tested and how they behave. I've done quite a fair bit if searching but my criteria seems a bit different to most. Basically it's a hardtop 90 on disco 300 axles, and I want to soften it up. It's a farm motor which I use regularly on the road, but also up and down fields checking cattle. On the field, it's hard as hell, so I'm looking for something that will soak up the washboard effect and soften the while thing. I'm looking also at using police spec springs on the back, because we don't have a stock trailer so it very rarely tows anything.

I see constantly "heavy duty" this and that, but can't find any shocks out there that say "keep ur foot down while checking dairy cattle and youl still have your teeth at the end of the day" :)

i dunno but i want to follow this thread for similar reasons.

I have an ex-MOD one with rock hard XD suspension and it rattles my teeth out constantly so i want to change to softer more forgiving setup. I am not after a lift or any ****, was thinking just fitting standard springs and shocks but would like to know what others have done/recommend

Ed

Standard springs and shocks are bound to be better than what your used too, but I still find it far too hard for what I'd call "cross country" or general rough terrain. Fine for slow greenlanes but chasing up a field and then back down, it's bloody hard

id go standard , my TD5 is on standard suspention and its the softest defender I have ever driven

stock suspention for everyday use

silly stuff for my v8 defender offroader

Must be the ****part shocks I've got then cos my standard set up is far too hard. Cats eyes in the road feel like rocks!

could well be , sometimes shocks and steering dampers need priming by compressing a few times off the vehicle , although im sure the problem would have the opposite effect and have little or no damping effect if not primed

id fit standard landrover springs and shocks , aftermarket parts vary hugely

Well I've been looking at Koni heavy track, yellow bilstien or even cheap and cheerful pro comp. they're all supposed to be "off road" shocks but I'm not sure if the heavy tracks and bilstiens are more catered towards heavily laden vehicles or overlanders

I've got standard height Terrafirma All Terrain shocks on standard springs and their ride is very firm, if you haven't got some weight in the back it's a rough ride. If I was going to change my shocks on the cheap side, I probably would go with Pro Comp ones as they seem more off road orientated and therefore, likely, softer. Of course If I had all the money in the world i'd be running King Coilovers and triple bypass shocks :D

I'm not specifically saying I want to do it cheap as such, more a case if worried about spending bilstien or heavy track money to then find it's exactly as you say, very firm indeed.

A nice soft supple fast reacting shock is what I'm after I guess, something that will compress and rebound quick enough to absorb the ripples and ruts of farmland.

then id advise standard land rover shocks , ideally genuine ones if you want to do the job properly , as said my TD5 is on standard , until the last few weeks I have had no issues , it does everyday driving comfortably, towing well, and very hard offroading over some proper axle twisters at speed and generally it comes really well , supple enough to cover it all without whacking your head on the roof like aftermarket stuff, the only problem is they are eyes at the top which have now cracked after age and such hard use so will get some pin to pin type mounts next , also avoid gas if you want a nice ride I find gas are very firm
