I have a Defender 90 2.5 TD with a 19J - Just wondering how it should perform and was looking for some comparisons. Nothing too stressy but mine does 0-40 in 13 seconds on the flat, unloaded, driver only onboard- Is this about right?

I don't think my old 19j ever got to sixty apart from on the back of an AA wagon

I would say thats somewhere near right, I think 200 D90 is 18 seconds ish to 60 and thats when it was new and not half worn out!

Hi. First up are you sure you have a 2.5 TD Defender? Is it maybe a Ninety or a One Ten?

Performance. Can't tell you any stats. But they should run ok. Not speedy, but should get up to speed fine and have no trouble driving with modern traffic.

They should sit at 60-65mph all day. And probably top out at about 70mph.

You should be able to feel the turbo and a surge of torque. Tired ones might well be down on power, for various reasons. But generally they are pretty good engines and in stock from should make 89bhp vs 107bhp for a stock 200Tdi Defender. So only 18hp difference.

Thanks all,
Note my time at 13 seconds was a 0-40 time. It will do 70 but I didn't have my calendar to hand.

It is a Ninety not a defender, but is a 19J 2.5 turbo Diesel. No surge applicable

The best way to describe a healthy 19J's performance in a 90 is 'fast enough'. Not fast by any stretch of the imagination, but able to keep up in traffic without feeling like you're slowing anyone down. Cruising speed should be around 60-65; I suspect the design speed was a nice round 100km/h as that's usually where the needle ends up on mine if I don't look at it. Pulling a heavy trailer it will feel underpowered, but will get you there.

Obviously, if it's worn out, it will be fairly terrible. Often a knackered 19J gets compared to the nearly-new 200tdi that replaced it, which isn't really a fair comparison.

Understood - I wouldn't want to compare it to a 200tdi, but would be interested in any comparisons from 19j owners (if there are any of us left haha)

There are still some 19J-equipped Landys out there! Now the supply of cheap Discos has pretty much dried up, the prospect of dumping an engine with possibly a minor fault to swap it with a tdi isn't as simple an option. Nowadays I think it's worth sticking with the 19J as a known quantity, unless you know exactly where a replacement engine has come from and what condition it's in. 200s are all getting on a bit themselves now anyway.

My Uncle has two 2.5Td's. One was getting a bit tired, but had 230,000 miles on the clock. The other was only on 170,000 or so and runs great. Not speedy, but should be more than happy on the road keeping up with modern traffic.

My brother had one a few years back. Well he still has the Land Rover, but it's a Tdi now. That's because I drowned the TD in a big mud hole. It however ran really well up until that point.

A 200Tdi is the easiest swap, but be warned, it's not quite as simple as unbolting a couple of things and doing them up again. There are things you need to do. And with an engine out, you'll always find other things to replace. Expect a fair amount of grunt work and several hundred quid or more, excluding the purchase of the engine.
