hi all
new to site so dont know if ive posted in right place.
i have an old 89 defender that is clunking underneath whenever i change gear.
its not from the gearbox it just does it with the momentum of a gear change.
i changed to propshaft as thought this might be the problem but no joy.
any ideas
thanks

Might be the rear A-frame ball joint clunking - or it might be slack built up in the axle (halfshafts, drive flanges, differential itself might be worn). Just a case of narrowing it down and finding out what needs replacing. ;)

Definately your A frame ball joint I would say. Make sure you have a big hammer when replacing it and follow Busters guide

I have the same problem, not really sure what to replace first (which is cheapest/easiest!?)

My suspicion is that it's my rear diff as there is quite abit of play in the prop :-(

20 quid for new ball joint and a few hours of your time. I would reccomend soaking your relevent nuts in wd40 for a few days first as can be stiff! The old ball joint comes out easy enough with a sledge hammer but get a big socket to wack to fit the new one and make sure its lined up properly first, or take it to an engineers and get them to press it in. I would do this job first as I thought my diff was bad as well but after a new joint I dont notice the play in the diff at all
