Is it a straightforward job to replace a CV boot, or is there anything I need to know before I start?

Well, I took you at your word...or rather, absence of them, and went ahead. Apart from the struggle to undo the hub nut, and persuade the hub to part company with its holder, it went ok. New MOT and a compliment on having "made a good job of it".
