Morning

I am new to Range Rovers and have recently purchased a 96 p38, obviously it has an oil leak (i believe they all do)
I was going to check the crankcase breather hose as a lot of forums mention this makes the leak worse, on taking the hose off i realised i don't know what it is meant to look like!
The hose at the L shaped end is just an empty rubber hose but where it connects to the engine there is a tube that has a disk in the top of it, that bit looked a little oily and gunked up but i couldnt see an obvious way of removing or cleaning it.
Can someone let me know what the correct way to clean or check the hose is and what it is meant to look like!
thanks

The plastic bit that you refer to is a seperator that fits into the metal stub tube on the L.H. Rocker Cover. It is what you say, a plastic rod with a few "Discs" moulded onto it. They do get clogged with oily residue over time and effectively stop the rocker cover from "Breathing" and the cover sludges up.
Best way to replace it is to remove the rocker cover (Make sure you have the gaskets..rubber are better than the old cork) and drift out from the inside..failing that, carefully drill it out, clean everything up and pop the new one in. Whilst you are getting down and dirty, you may as well remove and clean the other Rocker Cover, it will give you the chance to see the state of the rocker assemblies.
When the cover(s) are off, remember to remove the baffle plates....held on by small self tapping screws, to make sure everything has been cleaned....I find that the stainless steel pot scourers from Lidl and White Spirit is ideal....don't use the dishwasher or Er Indoors won't be happy !!!
Finally, replace the small breather hoses if they have splits or feel "Spongy"
The plastic separator, gaskets and hoses are cheap enough to buy.
