Discovery V8 ES year 2000 model.
The manual states to use one of the below coolants.

1) Havoline Extended Life Coolant (XLC)
or
2) Ethylene glycol based anti-freeze (containing no methanol) with Organic Acid Technology (OAT)

Please advise if this is a special coolant or can it be obtained from Halfords or other motor car care outlets.

Thanks.

Any one that meets or exceeds the requirments will do - Halfrauds or even better, a local motor factor will have it.

It's simply advertisment when they tell you you must use this and that is nonsense, its like one of the manuals tells you only Castrol should be used - BS!

Just take care now .... Methanol should be avoided in engines using aluminium alloy components.

In normal use the aluminium forms on its surfaces a protective "skin" of dull grey aluminium oxides, including INSIDE the water passages. Then no more oxidisation takes place.

However, Methanol slowly dissoves oxides of aluminium (not the metal itself) so the oxide coating is removed. Every time the oxide coating forms again, the methanol slowly dissolves it away. Eventually this process can cause harm. The metal is slowly being eaten away.

Best to use ethylene glycol antifreeze, but BEWARE!!! It is becoming difficult to tell which antifreezes contains what.

The people who make and sell antifreeze don't give a toss about the long life of your engine - they just want your cash NOW.
