ahhh ... so there's another bit of plastic which fits to the hose (currently still on the radiator hose in the car) then the two bits clip together and retain with a clip ... right?

That makes more sense. Won't have a chance to look until next weekend now but will be happy to get it sorted.

Cheers

Ok found the time to do the job, easy with your excellent instructions, thank you. That Y piece had been 'siliconed' to the block presumably to try and stop the leak. Cleaned it all up and refitted the replacement. It still leaks!!!

However, I have now got a video of it. It was a pretty 'loose' fit in to that new piece and I just knew it was never going to hold. I assume (maybe wrongly but judging from other forum posts) that the problem is that over time that other bit of plastic (inside the rubber hose) has distorted so I need one of them. Here's the vid ... what do you think?

If you look close the stainless steel band is on the connection to the Y which has a spring clip and believe me they are hard to get apart while in the car.

You will notice in this photo the large hose as had the stainless steel band removed so the inline stat could be fitted.

Hi J.
It's easier to get to the part by taking the manifold off, that should take no longer than 30 minutes, from there you wil be able to unbolt the Y connector.

They get brittle over time and can leak it's very rare it's the hose, but of cause they too can leak.

sometimes it's only the seal but personally i would change the whole unit as one.

As you can see from this photo it's a lot easier with the manifold removed, remember you will need to drain the coolant first.

Arctic2, Do you know the diameters of the pipes that go into the Y connector? The reason is that if metal bands cannot be used, I am thinking of ordering spring clamps. Thank you.
