Hi guys, for the last week or so the clutch in my 2003 td5 Defender has been slipping, usually just in 5th gear as I put my foot down, so as a wild stab in the dark, I'm guessing I'll be replacing the clutch very soon?
If this is the case is there anything else I should be looking out for, or any other components I should change while the engine or gearbox are out? Release bearing, oil seals etc?
The reason I ask is that I'm in New Zealand where parts cost 2-3 times the amount that they do in the UK, so I want to put through an order, and hopefully cover any contingency, and have it off the road for as short a time as possible, as it's my daily commuter.

How many miles has it done?

If it's over 100,000 you might want to change the dual mass flywheel as well, if fitted.

Hey lightning, It's on 118,000km, so about 75,000 miles.
I do a bit of towing, off roading, and it's a heavy old beast with the roll cage etc, so would it be worth upgrading to a heavy duty clutch and flywheel?

The standard clutch and flywheel etc should be fine, after all it was designed for use in a Defender, which is rated to tow 3500kg and has a maximum payload capacity of over 1,000kg.

While you have the clutch off change the flywheel input shaft bronze spigot bush as they do wear. Takes minutes, cost not a lot, and saves aggro later on.
DMFs are expensive so unless it is giving you problems I'd leave it alone.
I've not heard any good feedback regarding solid flywheel conversions and they are hard on your gearbox internals.

Thanks for all the good info, I've gone for a standard Valeo 4 piece kit, should be here in a week or 2, and I think I'll drop the gearbox.
