My disco is knackered major tin worm etc etc.

Saw a P38 advertised 2.5 diesel for £1500 with 120k.

Is it worth a look or am I asking for lots of trouble?

Warey of P38s due to reputation but have had a notion for one for a while.

Whats the main points to check apart from air suspension?

Just wondered if it was worth checking over or should I just stick to iscos which I can fix myself.

Don't want to by a bottomless money pit.

The rangy is 30 miles away.

Bought a 300tdi a coupla month ago `n` just sold my disel P38. Anyway, do your homework:check out threads on EAS (obviously) look at "rswsolutions"site; P38 not generally as prone to tin-worm as Disco, but all or most running gear is more expensve to fix. More so than other cars make sure you get a LONG test drive. start up hot and cold. Leave it overnight return in morning and recheck suspension. As with all cars try to take a mate to hold you back if you get too enthusiastic with the cheque book. More than most cars Rangies are rarely cheap to own and run, you may be lucky. but who knows? At that price (if you`ve time/space) you could break it for a small profit!

Make very sure it doesn't overheat. If it does it could be a cracked head especially if it has been overheating for a while.

Thanks guys maybe give it a by ball and stick to old disco if it passes mot.

Fed up welding in the cold each year, needs a clutch, rear balljoint, maybe gearbox!!

The Disco 300 Tdi is a much simpler car to work on and maintain. The P38 is a lot more complicated. A quantum leap better vehicle to drive and in the comfort stakes. But a bitch to sort IF you don't know what your doing. Get a good one, maintain it well and it will be a joy, get a bad one and it will cost you a lot of pain and cash.
