Hi all,
I am a tad baffled here.. ;) (freelander 1 5 door)

I have a situation where my central locking 'locks' but does not operate to 'open' the drivers door. Everything works in respect of - I press the unlock twice, all doors open (except the drivers door - LHD) , I need to then insert the key and manually open the drivers door..
When locking with remote - the closure of the drivers door (and all others) is fine.

Obviously, I suspect the central locking solenoid unit on the drivers door. but am beggared if I can find a diagram or description of it on RAVE ?

Can any kind soul point me in the right direction for a fix ?

I would like to replace the actuator to test, but cannot see any details or description of the unit .....
Hence, I do not know what to order from the breakers.
If on replacement, it still fails to operate, I can then test the electrical circuit.

But again, I need a diagram of WHERE the solenoid is located and removal and refit instructions.
Most cars I have ever worked on have a simple pull / push solenoid unit that links to the door lock mechanism. I am told by a so called specialist that I need to replace the whole locking mechanism !!! yikes !!.
A picture speaks a thousand words as is said... but, alas, I have no picture.

Much obliged.
Baffled in Portugal ;)

Going to bang my head against a hard object......:(

Yep cheaper to replace. Are you able to lock with key, as there is a barrel extender to lock unit that also fails. But as you can open then you should be able hear all locks open doing that twice.

Hi guys, Yes I am able to open with the key, and yes, on the second 'open' all the other locks operate as they should - just not the drivers door.

I think, as you both suggest, I will replace the unit. This begs the question - is there any difference between the LHD version and the RHD version ???
In other words, would a UK RHD PASSENGER unit operate properly as a LHD DRIVER'S unit ???
(Mine is LHD)
I am presuming that electronically there is no difference between the two units ?

I can get a passenger door unit from the uk no worries, but a LHD drivers unit --- much more difficult...

Cheers again to Mike and Saxa

There is a difference between the units. In the UK rhd, the drivers door unit is the master, the others are slave units.
I have no idea on lhd though. Sorry.
Mike

Interesting Mike, I am just trying to see if I can find the electrical diagram on rave to see if the wiring is different between the two sides. Obviously the units are 'handed', but I am 'hoping' that the master / slave part is controlled by the ECU - possibly there are more wires going to the master unit ? - for example to sense the key movement ?

Ahh, begger, yes, It seems there are 4 extra wires going to the 'master' unit (I presume to sense key movement etc....)

I might have to see if I can repair it or start the search for a replacement unit (LHD) .....

(I am a Yorkshire lad too Mike lol ;)) also, I might be needing a new gearbox after the internal noise it made yesterday when I dropped it into third...... yikes !

More bits to be squirreled away for the future to :)

lol :)
Yes GG, I am going to need more space soon haha..
Certainly didnt like the noise from the gearbox yesterday though . I dropped it off to have the rear brakes done 'properly' (free) as the last time they did a service they 'failed to notice that the adjusters were at max and the drums were way beyond tolerances)

I suppose I could rush back after I pick the flandy up and say "What the H$LL have you done to my gearbox ?????) :D

Excellent info Saxa. With your info / part numbers, I have now been able to make a price comparison between getting one from the UK or getting one from here in Portugal (new - Land Rover part)
By the time I take into account VAT and postage to here - then fitting time, it is actually cheaper to get a new one here. This morning when I went to pick up the Flandy, I got a quote of 110 Euro fitted (from my local indy!), so not bad at all. (and he is also going to de-cat mine (remove the innards from the little blighter hence leaving the 'box' !) - all for same price so bargain really. saves getting me ol' hands dirty.... :)
That compares favourably with the prices I have been seeing from your part numbers on the web.

Out of interest mate, do you have a link to a Land Rover parts catalogue ? - I have 'rave', but something that shows exploded diagrams and lists part numbers - that would be a god send.

Cheers again to all for the super help !

Joe

Hey Mike, NICE ONE ! - I take it those are all genuine part numbers ! - bleeding excellent. Huge thanks.

Rimmer Bros was or still selling the Original Technical Publication on DVD for various Land Rover vehicles. So you could drop them an email to see if they have one. Shame LRO or LRM Do not do a print a six monthly of dedicated to Freelanders etc besides this useful site.
