Hi guys,

Got myself a CB recently, courtesy of Spudy.....now, question is where is best to mount the aerial / antenna???

I had tried mounted on rear bumper end cap which looks alright, but am afraid the end cap will get torn off during offroad and goes with the antenna...

Am mounting it on the front bull bar nearer the passenger side using mirror mount kit, but doesn't seem right as it also looks vulnerable to branches from front..

Dont think its right to mount it on roof rack with same reason as above....

Running out of ideas for the ideal location to mount it while retain good reception.

ANY constructive ideas are welcome...

dont forget the mount must be earthed to the metal parts of the car or your SWR will be sky high and you will stuff the output chip in the rig.

Got mine slap bang in the center of me roof, on a mag mount, but then I don't take the slitty offroad. I should think it would be fine on the bullbar where it is tbh.

Thanks...noted that, hence the roof rack doesn't sound like a good idea as the roof is aluminium or was it birmabright....????

king you got a springer same as me and i can tell you they can take anything yer throw at it..

i used the same ariel on my shaff(10t bucket loader) in the quarrys mate and it got pulled bent over caught and twanged back all the time..

very minimal bending to the tip of it....trust me when i say get it mounted on yer roof rack..where ever you find it easiest to remove from the quick clip mount !

the don't call em tornado springer's fer nuthing ya knows

ps as said above it need's to be grounded the ally rack is ok as it's still conductive and mounted to yer gutter giving you a full ground plane..

also remeber i said about swr(swaring it down) this is to give you better power to wave if your swr is above 2.5/3 then you risk blowing the 1929c output resistor in that rig) and i dunt have any spares at mo

if you want hand setting it up you know where i am

dont think the roof is good...poor ground and too high....aerial is approx 1.6meter high....

btw...hows your assignment going...???

well...as you'd put it....I will keep it at the front on the bull bar....which is a much better ground vs the roof rack (aluminium roof).....besides....if its out the front, I could at least keep an eye on it.......

oh....just got meself a new 'second hand' set of wheels

......235/85 colway MT's, with a brand new spare....all on steel rim.....you interested with my 205/80/16 set????? 6 tyres in total, all on rangie alloy.....

tbh mate you should keep em as a second set

i know you don't run the landy alltime but a second set is good for in case you split a couple or for swaping the mt's to a comfeyer at ride

I have 1.6m springer mounted at the back of the roof on my Classic, trust me those things work. Height restrictions, trees etc don't damage the aerial. You can bend 'em, twist 'em and they just keep coming back for more, just make sure your mounting is well screwed down.

Do take note that it is important to have a good ground for the aerial and get the SWR as low as possible. If you need to improve your ground, you can always run a separate ground lead to the aerial mount.

King It doesn't matter that the roof is aluminium. This is a common myth. Dead centre of the roof is best for a good groundplane. But anywhere on the vehicle will do just so long (as has been said) the mounting has a good earth. If your not sure how good the earth is then just run a length of wire from the base of the aerial mount to a good earth point.

Thanks guys for all your input......I'll keep up at the front on the bull bar....that way...i will remember to remove it when i park my car at supermarkets......

Mine stays on the roof all the time, its mag mounted but I've had no problems so far, apart from the lads at college unscrewing it and jousting me with it.. but I don't think you'll have that problem.
