So, I was taking my daughter and son in law to their restaurant for a meal, when the engine cut out completely. As I free wheeled to a halt in a farm driveway, I could see smoke coming from under the bonnet.
We all jumped out, and I lifted it up, only to find acrid smoke coming from under the inlet manifold. My son in law who was standing at the side said, "I can see fire":flame:Then I too saw it so I grabbed a water bottle I had, and pored it over the area, which extinguished it immediately. I got out the tools and took off the Air intake assy, but couldn't see anything burned. A call to Green flag came next, and they sent a local recovery service to take us home.
Next morning, early, I set to work taking off the intake manifold, only to find a fried glow plug cap and roasted wiring. WTF! On closer inspection of the underside of the manifold, I found it had seemingly been burned through from the inside.
presumably by hot gasses. My theory at the moment is that maybe the EGR valve may be stuck open, thus letting far to much hot exhaust gas through, which had melted the plastic manifold and then fried the other stuff. Anyone had a similar experience?
