Hi,

The title for this post was taken straight from my Haynes manual.

Problem I have is that with the ignition switched off the pump continues to run without stop. To help confirm the unit in question, it is the cylindrical motor / pump unit sitting just in front of the booster on top of the wheel arch. It normally comes on with the ignition and goes off after 45 seconds, or until the brake pedal has been used a few times.

Any ideas, maybe an open circuit / wire fault. Or perhaps the unit is 'stuck' open if there is a live feed? Or is the unit itself faulty??

Hope my description makes some sense and that someone has an idea.

Thanks in advance

Colin

First you need to download RAVE, I assume as you are refering to Haynes that this is a classic and not a P38?

Hi,

Yes sorry, its a classic 1991 3.9 efi with ABS.

The pump motor is running fine and as it charges and you hear the rpm drop - which always seems normal - but it now does'nt cut out and like I say contimues even with the ignition off.

Thanks

Sorry, I know nowt about the classic.

One of two things, the relay is stuck on, or the pressure switch on the pump is buggered. pressure switch is not able to be purchased without pump I don't think.-

Yes, I was hoping it was not something that involved a part costing £ss.

Any pointers as to where the relay lives, under the passenger or drivers seat?

Is the pressure switch sitting piggy back on the pump motor body? Is this something that sticks and can be freed up in any way?

If I cannot find a easy fix I will be thinking about alternatives. Perhaps removing ABS system parts and going for a more basic set up?

Thanks

relays under passenger seat access from side just below seat rail, the pressure switch piggy backs on the pump motor body should be a green colour. just had a look on ebay there is a brand new pump still in its vacuum sealed bag for a few hundred £.

Thanks for the pointers, cant see a new pump for that kind of money but maybe something to do with you being in Cairns and me in Scotland!

Think I may have to keep an open mind and grab one if I can, as I've a hunch it will come down to the pump / pressure switch...

Update...connected the pump back up, started it and everything worked as normal...

Stopped it and repeated the process a few more times and still fine...

Not counting my chickens until I drive it a bit, but so far so good as I was ready to start changing relays etc.

As it had been parked up for 12 months perhaps something we mentioned may have been sticking open / shut...time will tell!

Further update...

Symptoms returned so decided to replace the black pump relay under the passenger seat.

Not counting my chickens but is working fine!

thanks for the update. Oh well if it isn't relay, at least you know where it is now, and be able to reach over and unplug it in a hurry before pump destroys itself, providing you left the seat base plastic cover off that is.
