Changed all the discs and pads, at the same time cleaned up the calipers, de-siezed the sliders and bled the system through as per the procedure.
Got about 3/4" movement on the pedal and the car stops great:D, tried stopping hard from 60 and no skidding or pulling, you can feel the abs cutting in. Slow running in traffic below 5mph is different, sometimes feels like a complete loss of servo, brake pedal goes hard and feels like chatter through the pedal:(, but back on the open road at any higher speed the brakes feel really good, strong, smooth and even. Bearmach discs and mintex pads. The abs light was on before and after disc and pad replacement, was going to check out the sensors next.
Thanks

ABS fault, sounds like the ABS is cutting in at low speed. You need to get the fault codes read and fix that first. Could be a sensor pushed back.

Hi Data, checked the sensors were fully home, this fault happens sporadically and you have described the symptoms perfectly, for some reason a fault with the accumilator was going through my head but then i think I would have a constant problem.

The odds are on a duff sensor or a bad connection. As the sensors use magnetic effects, the faster the wheel rotates the greater the effect. Sensors are pretty reliable, it's more often a broken wire or bad connection but it could be the actual ABS ECU. You really need to read the fault codes to find out which sensor.

Thanks, will put it in my local garage and get the codes checked.

If you plan keeping the car for a long time, think about saving up for a Faultmate to read the codes yourself, it will more than pay for itself in the long run:D

Data you were right, I checked the wheel sensors and the fns was unseated, seated it and now my brakes work perfectly except that the light is still on. Probably will keep it as its been great in the winter and tows the boat with ease, was considering changing it and the Alfa and getting a Disco 3, but i like my rangie and love the Alfa. Might look into a faultmate as I like to do my own maintenance on the rangie, thanks for the help.
