Hello,

Just been looking under my bonnet and just at the front of the engine on the right hand side I can see a little belt weaving in and out of a few things.

I always thought these cars had a chain? If so could this just be a fan belt?

My car is a Defender 90 TD5 2006 (56 plate)

Td5 camshaft is driven by an internal chain on the outside of the engine is the serpentine belt which drives the cooling fan water pump power steering pump alternator etc

And the air conditioning if you have it.

While you're looking, check that it's in good condition, not frayed or worn down to the fabric. I see the Haynes manual recommends you keep a spare with you in the car.

Don't forget the belt tensioner too if it starts to let go then it can affect the belt, mine started to go frayed on one edge.

Yes, a spring loaded jockey wheel low down on the driver's side of the engine. Hooray - no more messing about levering the alternator about to get the belt tight and then discovering it has gone slack again as soon as the bolts are done up.

Makes me feel quite nostalgic, except mine was a dynamo.
