Hi chap, I have disc mk1 200tdi, I need to get engine out to repair clutch lever, how do I get at the bell houseing nuts.

if your taking engine out to do it you will have to remove mounts and let engine drop further down

As other poster said, completely remove engine mounts. Lower engine as low as it can go. That should allow access. Get 2 to 3 feet of extension bars and ratchet. One person slides this along the top of the gearbox from underneath the car. A second person working in the engine bay should be able to see the socket coming through and guide it on to the bolthead, and more importantly, hold it there while the ratchet guy does his bit. They cam out quite easily when I did mine that way.

you can remove the bulkhead soundproof to give you a little extra also
