Right.

The whole reason I bought this car was because I think they're great and also that I wanted to be come handy with a spanner.

At the moment the AA is over tonight and they will be diagnosing what's wrong with the car. Worst comes to worst... Could be a new clutch.

A new clutch fitted is going to be around £800 or so.

This would be me definitely jumping in at the deep end... But...

Is there any reason why I could not do it myself using a place like this?

Yes. I have no clue about what I am doing but surely with everyone's advice and a friend to help (one of you lot and a sandwich/beer tab would be ideal) it isn't impossible is it?

How much cheaper would I be able to do it for? How long would it take?

nothing on a landrover is hard to do just varying degrees on weight to lift and unpleasantness to endure

Im no mechanic, but with a few basic tools, jack,stands and a decent set of spanners/sockets, it aint a hard job. Just undoing bolts, moving things out of the way( usualy heavy as pressbrake says) changing clutch and putting it all back together again. I changed my first LD clutch while doing up an 86 110. I lifted engine up and round to get to clutch in althought you may want to do it from underneath. I never had an engine hoist just 2 bandstands and a lump of wood across the wings. Take photos as you go if you need you but there is a lot of help on here.

Clutch can be done without removing engine or totally removing gearbox and tranny just did mine without an hoist, remove props, clutch slave cylinder,hand brake cable, floor and gearbox tunnel undo gearbox mounts put a jack under flywheel housing and a ratchet strap around transfer box and a bar across front seats to stop it all hitting the deck you can then remove gearbox to fly wheel housing bolts and pull both boxes back and rest on middle crossmember with enough room to remove and replace clutch, then to put back get another ratchet strap around gearbox bell housing and over the roof line them up and with a bit of pushing and swearing put it back together again took me a day on me lonesome
