Water pump and thermostat to be done on my 2003 TD6 - Doozer

Snap - (only Petrol) Stat was done a few months back...and just done the pump....

What are your symptoms? or is it a case of replace before failure...?

My Symptoms

In warm "normal" UK weather my engine temp gauge is stable at almost half way and heater is toasty hot

During the latest cold snap my temp gauge would take an age to get warm - once warm it would visibly creep down if cruising down hill (v.low revs or engine off load) and cabin heater temp flutuated

So I feel my thermostat is either "sticky" and intermittently works or is stuck slightly open so therefore in cold weather the TD6 is taking an (even longer) age to warm up (even with the FBH operating)

The thermostat and its housing on a TD6 is bolted directly to the water pump so whilst I have all the associated covers and gubbings off it makes sense to do the water pump at the same time.

Note

I have no air bleed issues or coolant leaks and certainly no overheat issues either

V8 Stat housing is same - bolted to pump...!!

Hmmmm certainly seems like a circulation issue!

Does the TD6 use a Electric Stat like the V8....the V8 controls the stat opening electrically....during normal operation the stat is just a normal 'wax stat' type, but under heavy load, high revs etc... the ECU can heat a coil in the stat which opens the valve further to increase cooling....and then close it again once the engine is back to low load idle again...

TD6 uses caveman technology in the thermostat dept and is a known "failure" point !
