So, I need a new battery (why couldn't the bastard thing wait for more than a week after I got it back from the welders...?). With other cars I've just bought the biggest battery that'll fit in the tray from the local farm suppliers, but I have a memory that the TD5 requires some ridiculously large number of CCA and a super large AH rating.

What's recommended?
 
120+AH is a must but I believe the model is C31-900.
The battery box is a bit specific in size and some options don't fit fully into the bottom of it because the bottom of the box reduces in size.
However, rather than spend a fortune on OEM I have raised the level of the bottom of the box with a hard nylon insert (old £land bread boards x 2).
The cheaper options now fit too.

I bought my Numax directly from the Tayna warehouse as I work nearby. They didn't say anything about any special care needed and I haven't touched it in the years I have had it. The only downside is that the price seems to have gone up. I wouldn't pay any mre than I need to.
 
A couple things to remember about Tayna Batteries. Firstly they are not a battery manufacturer, they are a supplier and therefore able to supply a number of similar or even identical batteries from different "manufacturers" and at different prices too.
Secondly, the number of manufacturers of a particular size or type of lead/acid battery is in reality, quite small, consequently manufacturers will buy a product from another manufacturer and re-badge it as their own, it goes on all over many industries.
For those reasons, I would suggest that you search using the product type number (C31-1000) rather than stipulating a manufacturer's name to come up with the greatest range of batteries and make your choice based on other information.

better verify the fluid level in it then, cos that's why the lids of those compartments are removable
 
Checking the fluid level is to avoid problems which can be created by low fluid level ;) ... i've had numax on mine before the bullet and had to top it up with water twice in 5 years then it became weak for -25*C in the winter if it stood more than 5 days unstarted... i know that such low tempetrature is not very probable for you though
 
I know why the levels can be checked and a vented battery gives more scope for fast charging (If ever needed). I have had Numax before with no problems. The worst killer for batteries is letting them go totally flat.

got it started by jumping it off the wife's Golf. The indignity of it...!

It's now on the drive plugged in to the Ctek on 'recondition'. I'll leave it connected all night and fingers crossed it'll play tomorrrow and with any luck my nice new battery will be here on Tuesday.
 
Well I forgot to order a battery. Doh.

Fortunately my local Landy place had a lovely gurt big Yuasa 1000CCA job in stock. Ok it cost me a few quid more than ordering from Tayna, but it's in and fitted. And I've no worries that I'll be able to start the 'Rover at early o'clock tomorrow morning.

It doesn't happen but then it does unfortunately, a battery going faulty I mean, so if yours does within the warranty period there's a lot less hassle in returning it to your local Landy place that Tayna which I think is worth a few bob extra,
