When I had my P38 4.6, I got an aftermarket one 150A for £120 no exchange from Island, output was down to 13.8v on the original Bosch one
I still have it in the shed, was going to get a kit to repair it but never got round to it.

If you take the belt off you can feel for any wear in the alternator bearings. Should be smooth no side to side movement.

13.8V sounds right for an early one or diesel. Doesn't mean a diode hasn't gone though.

As Above, 13.8 volts is normal for all diesels and most V8s. A faulty diode pack will cause erratic output but will not usually light the battery warning light.
