Guys I'm new here and I've just bought my first landy. It's a 1989 110, 2.5TD. The battery is knackered in it and I'm having trouble getting a straight answer as to a replacement. Land rover dealers want a chassis number which I'm sure will lead to open wallet surgery. They have said I will need one with between 800 and 900 cranking amps. The landy has a 9.5 ton winch on it too. So does anyone know what I need?

I don't know the answer about the winch, but when I changed my battery I went for a 110 amp. When I looked up on Google most suppliers were suggesting something between 60 to 70 amp. I prefer a good heavy duty one as where I live in the winter it can drop down to -18C. I believe in bigger the better.

I concur. bigger the better - I tend to get the biggest I can physically fit into the space on whatever vehicle....

And, sadly, it can also get blinking cold here in the winter, and it sure tests batteries.

I would also recommend a split charge system if you are going to use the winch seriously.

Thanks guys, all food for thought. I doubt it'll be really really cold here and I don't intend on using the winch only to get myself out of trouble if I get stuck. I reckon I'll go for the hankook.

I would go for an optima red top if I were you, I had to get one when the current battery wouldn't fit next to the yellow top I bought. They are slightly better than a normal battery for long draining things like a winch I think, and are sealed so that you don't have to worry about maintenance or spilling acidy water everywhere. Wow, I sound like a salesman, I'm not, I'm just sad and really impressed with mine :D

Agreed. The one in mine looks like it would jump start a locomotive...

With a winch you're probably best wiring that to a secondary battery of its own. A caravan split charge relay can be used to link the batteries.

The ebay battery will be fine if it will fit and your not doing serious winching

We fit 664s to tractors and they start them fine ,ive got one in my disco (had to butcher the rad mount to get it in) and she starts instantly with a touch of the key with no heat even in winter

A red / yellow top battery may be better but it depends on your budget

Simply go and buy the biggest one you can A afford and B that will fit in the battery box.

Halfords do a 900CCA Yuasa battery which would be good, to be honest the Halfords own brand ones are good, they are Varta, the 3 year warranty Calcium ones are best.

I have a Numax 019 in my 90 at the moment, 800CCA, 100Ah, about 5 years old, won't make it through this winter coming but its been a good battery.

Thanks again guys for all the help after extensive research I'm going for the silver one in halfords in the link above. It ticks all the boxes plus has a great warranty.
