Can you get new bearings for the auto tentioner for the aux belts on a 300tdi? Pads sell the auto tentioner but its £40+vat

You CAN buy the bearing off ebay for about £5 and it's a fiddly but do-able job.
The question I'm asking is why do you need to replace it - is it because it squealing like a canary? If so, before you spend any money, try the "penny" trick.
Takes 5 mins to do and has lasted 12 months up to now on mine.

you don't need a press
they can be pressed in by a vice with suitable spacers (a socket)
an the job is a piece of pis# to do, can be done in less than an hour
and its a standard bearing that can be got from any engineering retailers.

buy the bearing it will be as good as new the bolt in the middle of the pully (15mm spanner) is a left hand thread remove the circlip and the bearing will nock out

cheeky bastid the bearing is 6203r or rdl it's a standard size so should be available from any good engineering supplies

i've no idea what the penny trick is but i bought a bearing off ebay, took 30 mins to do and that included fitting new belts, the trick to get the ring clip out is to bang a screwdriver on the opposite side to the gap and one end will ping out, carefull tho coz i think the pulley is cast or something.

Thanks for all the info. Yes the pully is squeeling and increases in pitch with the revs. I have watched it with the bonnet up and at tick over the wheel touches the belt and then bounces away from the belt and thats when its little bouncy up and down dance starts. I will try the penny trick on it first but think I will probably find the wheel hard to turn. Just curious cos one of the replys says if you dont know what your doing you will need to rebuild your engine???
the point he was trying to make was that the £40 it would cost to buy a complete unit is a lot lot less than the cost of an engine rebuild which is possible if you make a hash of replacing the bearing
spend the money and sleep well

Twasnt your post I ment Sean but good point about the buying one pre made. Im wondering what it could do that would damage the engine. If I lock the bearing solid and it grinds it way through the belt the waterpump would stop but at the same time a big battery not charging light would come on and me arms would pop ooot there sockets due to no power steering (or is that on the other belt??) any who.... just wondered
you probably would get some notice - but unless the credit crunch has hit you in the nuts is £40 that much for peace of mind when yer zooming down the M6 at middnight in the rain on a Sunday ?

Slackened the nut and put a penny behind the tentioner in the 9 oclock position. All is well! Credit crunch Landy repairs bought to you by Loony Zone! Thanks for the recomendations from you all!:clap2:
