bit confused over the autobox changing on my 2004 ES premium diesel auto - changes into 2nd at about 13, 3rd at about 32 then at about 37/8 it feels like there is another change and then what I think is 4th at 53 - can anyone explain what is happening at 37/8?

The "change" at 53 is not. It's the transmission locking up. Which means the torque converter is locked, so it drives like a manual. It's actually more noticeable than the gear changes.
