She's been leaking ATF for a while now but on Friday the big red beast decided to blow a hose and dump the remaining oil all over the engine bay :doh:

Managed to limp home at 5mp for the last mile or so (phew) and ordered a set of hoses and a gallon of ATF.

Today I started the replacement only to find the driver's side pipe fused to the cooler. Naturally, when a little 'force' was applied, the nut stayed put and the plug sheared itself out of the cooler. *sigh*

So now I'm waiting for a replacement cooler with 2tons of rusting red sat on the drive. Grrr!

Bit late posting this but hey, it's been a busy couple of weeks.

So, I fixed the beast but the repair wasn't without some problems. For anyone attempting this procedure I'd recommend the following: First, buy yourself a cheap 24mm spanner (ring & open) and cut it in half. The pipe which enters the top of the gearbox is a swine to reach and I struggled to fit a full length spanner in there.

The easiest way was to chop the brass pipe about 2 feet from the end, slide the ring spanner over and run it up to the nut 'buzz' style. The short throw makes leverage a challenge so I popped a socket & tyre-bar on the end and she came out nicely.

The short open spanner made getting the new pipe on a heluvalot easier than it could have been.

Also, before attempting this, remove the pipe running from the bottom of the box (runs to the off-side of the cooler) or you'll struggle to fit an arm up there. Once the top pipe is in, the lower one will slide up nicely.

Not the easiest job I've undertaken on the LR but seeing all the shiny new brass under there was reward enough and she runs like a dream now.
