The larger hole is meant to have a cover plate permanently fixed, the smaller hole is for a wading plug, so it normally remains open and is only blocked whilst wading.

Auto with a wading plug?.. and the torque converter access plate with with only two screws? there's three.
Only manual gearbox models have a wading plug and also only for the diesel at the base of the timing cover.

the missing plate looks very similar shape to a egr blanking plate with 2 bolt holes will fab something at weekend to cover it

Can't help there, i'v never see a diesel engine in real life.. so will pass on egr :D

Also this is the only blanking plate see this link. http://www.brit-car.co.uk/product.php?xProd=117031 if that's the one then pt no's are:

FRC7706 cover
FRC7707 gasket
SH106151L M6x15 screws x3

Or you could just come over to hucknall and collect the spare one I have.... if you really feel the need to cover the hole.

Could be auto and manual bell housings are same but I'm only guessing ?

Look in your owners handbook and you will see this: :)
Manual gearbox models are provided with
drain holes at the lowest point of the flywheel
housing (between engine and gearbox). In
addition, 300 Tdi models also have a drain
hole at the bottom of the engine timing cover.
These drain holes enable excess oil to drain
from the vehicle, thereby reducing the risk of
inadvertent damage to the clutch or camshaft
drive belt.

would do but got no handbook just bought haynes manual ! but it defo has a threaded hole in bottom of housing will put a pic on tommorow as i am changing track rod end and making a plate to fit over inspection hole ...

Got manual and found out what the missing plate is ! It's the cover for finding tdc on a auto !!! :D
