It appears that the search engine in lz ignores words of three characters or less unless the search phrase is put in quotes.

yes - and select 'search titles only' - try it - it only returns results where the phrase 'steering box' occurs in the title of the thread - not any thread that happens to have the word 'steering' or 'box' somewhere in it
this is how i think it SHOULD work
if you put in engine oil it should find and highlight all occurances of those two words, even if they are seperated
if you put in "engine oil" if should find and highlight ONLY where those words appear in THAT order
currently if you search for "engine oil" it highlights every occurance of those words including together and apart
as far as i can tell that's how all other engines work, although i expect Mr Axminster will disagree

ffs - if you go to the advanced search & put the phrase "engine oil" (including the ") in the keywords box & select 'search titles only' it works like you said in red. - it only returns threads the subject of which is engine oil - which shirly is what you want - therefore it works

but but ......... how many people will notice the "advanced" option ? - how many people would faint from trying to figure out the advanced seacrh options ?
it should find strings of words (including 3 letter ones) from the simple search box
i thought the idea was to make search work so that peeps dont keep asking the same questions, and i suspect the fact that they do keep asking shows that most peeps dont go do the advanced thing
