So reading some of these threads lately, and "Secondary couplings" were mentioned, I've had a search and can't really find much mention of these in regard to Sankey trailers, so what's the score, does anyone have any idea:confused::confused: Would a simple bit of chain/cable suffice:confused::confused:

Its usually a cable which is attached to the handbrake. If the trailer becomes detached it pulls the handbrake on. Whatever it is it needs to be strong enough to pull the brakes on without breaking. Mine you simply wind it round something, usually part of the tow bar and clip it back onto itself.
 
And if you are talking about unbraked trailers it needs to be a chain, which is connected to the towing vehicle and is strong enough and tight enough to stop the trailer tow hitch from hitting the ground if it comes unhitched.

Sorry, ye, I know what a secondary coupling is, but there is no provision for such a thing on a Sankey. On of the recent threads said something along the lines of "A trailer must have a secondary coupling, incase of failure of the main coupling".
Which got me thinking that there isn't one on a Sankey, and I don't want plod shouting at me:D:D

But not sure this is kosher especially the trailers must have a 50mm ball bit. None of our trailers do.

I work in the water industry,none of ours do either and were still buying trailers with the ring and pin set up. like said above,break away cable for braked trailers and HD chain for un braked. Check the ratchet part of the hand brake for holes. Another thing to add is the break away/ chain has to be mounted seperatly to the hitch.

The way Im reading it, a chain/cable to stop the draw bar hitting the floor will do:confused::confused:
I'll have to have a look and see if there's some way of activating the handbrake, but there's definitely not something already there:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I likes what that guy did to the handbrake, that cable operated, a big f-off chain, and a pin locking your Nato hitch (you will be using the proper hitch wont ya?) should have it all covered.
Will probably rip the arse off your landy:eek::eek::eek:
 
Seems to me if its un braked then secondary coupling i big #### off chain if it is braked then a deadman.....but not sure if age is a factor.

Ye, its the correct hitch, with the right pin, 12.9 bolts and an 8mm spreader plate either side of the crossmember;);)
Might have a look at that handbrake mod, (although Im not convinced it would work on a loose trailer bouncing about), and get myself some chain, tiz all a bit confusing though:confused::confused:
 
What ya need is a pocket copper n vosa man all rolled into one, that ya get out each time ya hitch a trailer that sez ya or nay. Just pop him back in yer pocket and away ya go!
