Brought a Landy to LZ11. Yay!!
just as I'm entering the Gabalfa roundabout in Cardiff this lunchtime!!

Manage to limp the Disco against the inner barrier on the inside lane - defo not ideal but with no drive I was f%&£ed. Just for the smart arses - I'd just pulled out of the junction opposite so I wasn't carrying a lot of speed!

If you fancy a laugh - this is where I ended up - google the following co-ords and then street view it - you'll see a sign for mda clinic or something - I was 'parked' by that!

I'd had the warning signs of a rumbly UJ and had them in hand with the intention of sorting them this weekend - gutted is not the word.

All credit to Celtic Recovery who ferried the Disco, me, the missus and our vehicle mad 2 year old home. He loved the ride in a big lorry!!

Now the joy of removing the prop on the road out the front begins - any tips gratefully received
 
you could have tied it up, depending on where it snapped, or removed it and drove home in diff lock.

it's just a bunch of bolts and nuts.. not hard.

Can be a bugger to get clearance, so you can either spin the prop to get to the bolts or you can buy a lil tool made for the job. :)
 
Gave way right on the UJ housing and took out part of the prop that attaches to the box.

Wasn't drivable - its a '98 300tdi and I'm informed that they won't drive with the front prop removed?!?

Also, I've cable tied the prop up for the moment - I tried engaging drive outside earlier - nothing in H or L - didn't want to try diff lock as I fear the damage that I might do!

Is the gearbox/transfer box shot or is it just the case of the missing prop making the box not drive?
 
I've got a spare front prop and rear prop which I'll do for £25 posted if they're any good to you?
The front one may need a UJ, mind. Seem to remember the one being a bit stiff.

due to the missing prop. have a read up on how it works.

without diff lock the front will just spin as all the power goes to it. With diff lock, then partial drive will also go to the rear.

Be careful with the lil cable tie, as the front wheels move (if in diff lock) then the prop will still turn and it could snap the cable tie or bang around.
 
There be 10 lil cable ties - and they ain't so little!

Just tried the following...

H range - no drive in any gears, 2-5 sound 'crunchy' when lifting off the clutch to engage drive
L range - again same as above.
DL H range - again same as above
DL L range - again same as above

Am I correct in thinking it maybe ebay/scrappy time for 'new' box?!?

And to cap it all its the missus' birthday and we were on our way to get her some new sunglasses as her pressie as her raybans are over 10 years old and have seen better days!

She's gonna keep this running for weeks, even months who knows! :eek:

You sound pretty confident that if I whip the offending prop off and bung another on, all should be well - am I sensing this correctly?!?

no, as it should have moved in diff lock.

is your diff lock light coming on? Is the front still spinning in diff lock? What's the rear doing?

Just been out again and had a fiddle - got the DL light to come on, release the stick it goes off - pushed the stick - light on, engaged 1st and reverse - hey presto MOVEMENT!

10 not so little cable ties - went for a interesting fly.

So I'm guessing all is not lost?

hehe, be careful with a wild prop. Just sounds like replacing the prop would fix it imo.

Mark's offer is bloody good, a new gkn uj to replace his broken one would cost about a 12quid delivered from ebay.

Cheap fix! :)

Go get yourself a greasegun and some grease and take care of the rest of the ujs and prop nipples. Also check them to make sure they aren't in a bad state.

If you really need to drive it now, then remove the rest of the front prop, should be fine to drive on it for a while.
 
It ain't going nowhere until its sorted - the rear can have new ujs and a donut while I'm under there - might as well as I'm goint to be under there this evening taking the front off.

Already have a few LR original UJs - bought some from a guy locally who had a garage and bought a load of stock from Bearmach when they moved from Cardiff to Caerphilly.

I managed to grab them at a quid each before he clammed up!
 
Only came here cos the title on disco page said "and the front prop goes" thought it might be funny but "as her raybans are over 10 years old and have seen better days!" made my day:hysterically_laughi

btw, if you were to buy a new prop, then be aware that even though britpart say they are hardy spicer, they are built in india and not the same quality as the old spicers.

bearmach still have old stock of genuine gkn ones.

good luck! I'm also replacing my rear ujs this weekend.
 
FiL is in the trade and is an old LR buff - he will get the right gear at the right price should it be needed - Of this I am sure as it'll be his Disco I'll be 'borrowing' bits from if time starts to drag! :D

Livers - glad I gave you a laugh - she's managed to twist the raybans and scratched the glass by sticking them in her handbag/baby changing bag over time.

I don't have a clue what to get her for her birthday so this is a kind of easy cop out - or it would have been had the bloody UJ decided to have hung on a few hours longer - bastard!:doh:

But at least I'm getting to have 'a play' with my toy in the sun, albeit emergency surgery so to speak.
 
sun! lucky bugger, it's peeing it down here.. hope it clears up tomorrow, else the kitchen will be getting nice dirty prop sized visitor :D
 
Update....

UJ's swapped - and after salvaging part of the prop from one in the back of the garage I now have a fully functioning prop again.

Still not fitted however as where it gave up 2 of the bolts at the gearbox end are in a right old state so I have decided that for the want of a few quid, the old girl can have nice new nuts and bolts on the front prop both sides!

Just have to get the 'mating' plate off the box to replace the bolts - anyone have any idea what size socket I need - I know its bigger than a 27mm, also is it torqued, or is it just tightened until you can get the bugger to go nomore!

Isn't it just typical that this happens on a bank holiday weekend and everything is shut until tuesday - argh!

socket needed is 30mm ,just very tight is ok

Now waiting for my bro to get here with his big works box of nuts and bolts - being an engineer he is positive he'll have the right type in his box - we'll see!

they arent std bolts ,they are 3/8 unf but shank is a specific length so that both flanges are driving on shank and not thread
 
I did tell him this but he's a stubborn sod - I guess its wait until Tuesday for the world to restart turning and try Bearmach/Promec/Foundry/Barry 4x4 or the local LR dealer.

I'm guessing Bearmach will probably have 'em!
