Hi, I spent all yesterday off the road with a failed alternator regulator, on my 300tdi 110, (Lucas A127) eventually got a similar unit from a Ford Sierra at the local scrap yard, swopped pulleys and am back on the road. I was surprised at the original only being 65A, and I am thinking I will invest in a new one as the bearings on this one aren't great (although better than the failed one); has anyone done an upgrade recently? I was just thinking there is probably a higher output one out there somewhere if you know where to look.

First of all, the A127 alternator is dead easy to refurbish. Find this guy on ebay * 8617petert * he sells refurb kits that have everything in them. Just message him from ebay if he doesn't have any refurb kits on at the time.
If you do refurb your own alternator, just be careful when fitting the brushes & holder, it's easy to snap a brush.
The A127 alternators are either 45amp or 65/70 amp.
The Marelli alternators are 100amp, but not not easy to refurbish, as it's normally the bearing that seizes and spins in the casting, knackering up the casting.

i thought of the same upgrade before,There is a 100amp alternator for the 300tdi engine which ,is a straight fit, you have to upgrade the wiring as well. I personally decided against it as you really dont need a higher out put alternator for a diesel defender. I run two winches worklights cb,stero etc and my alternator and batteries cope just fine. Dont buy a cheap alternator go for a quality one like a denso there about £100 but well worth it

Denso 100A (AMR5425 G) straight swop onto a 300TDi, £130 inc VAT and P&P from Island 4x4.
