Morning all

As you may or may not know I'm now the proud owner of an 04 disco 2 pursuit in the lovely burgundy colour.:)

I've
used the search function and it didn't really bring up the answer I was looking for.

Problem is its got 2 cheap nexen on the front wheels with 5mm of tread apiece which seem fine in the dry but want to push wide at even modest speeds when its wet or damp and the abs is very quick to kick in under normal breaking which is slightly unnerving being new to the land rover experience! (should say bushes and shocks seem in good order)

Given the tread amount I feel its more a compound based issue than tread level and would definitely call these ditch finders and not particularly fit for purpose!

Now I realise A/T tyres are about compromise and I don't want to lap the nurburgring in under 8 minutes, I'm just after safer wet tarmac grip without resorting to road tyres.
So can anyone suggest which out of the main brands give better wet weather road holding? I suspect that 70% will be road use and 30 off road roughly if that makes much of a difference.

Thanks in advance

Phil

Hi, first of all the ABS system will make tricks as long as you dont have all 4 completely similar tyres... even if they are new but different brands on front vs rear is not ok, if there's a difference between circumference/diameter too the whole ABS functionality will be mixed up, about good AT not very expensive tyres here's some info https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/cheapest-at-tyres.289929/#post-3583005 , as long as you know how to drive it the D2 will get you out from difficult terrain even with worn tyres:

important is to be as close to standard dimension as possible then the TC will do it's job as it was conceived, the more difference it is from standard the more reduced the TC involvment will be

Ah that would explain the ABS then, thanks!

I'm lucky that I've got diff lock fitted also but it's currently suffering from from townie syndrome currently as the lever wont move left at all (fine between hi+low)

So in effect I definitely need 4 new tyres then as the rears are a part worn pirelli and a nearly new Michelin!

I have always used BF Goodrich A/T and I love them. Not noisy and great grip when driven how it should be, and even when I have been a bit 'ambitious' they have been fine, and great off road too!

get 4 similar tyres ASAP cos the transfer box can suffer bad your way

Ok so I've just been outside and looked at them all again

The spare is 5mm and the Michelin that I thought was nearly new is also 5mm

If I use the spare to replace the 3.5mm pirelli on the osr all 4 tyres on the road would roughly be 5mm of tread.

Would this be OK to limit T/Box damage until I can get 4 new tyres?

it's not about thread so much as about circumference/diameter cos even between same size tyres there could be differencies, as long as you dont have similar tyres all around you are not on the safe side IMO

I run my Defender on General Grabber AT2's. They are not noisy, good grip in both the wet and snow. On a recent trip to Morocco two other vehicles were running with them, one was a Disc. They stood up well in the sand and on rocks, so much so I then went and bought my set. I also looked at Coopers, I went for the Grabbers as they were a bit cheaper and had a better review for the snow. I believe there is a newer tire out from General Grabber which has replaced the AT2's.
You will need to change the whole set, shouldn't mix and match tires on a 4x4

I have nexens on my landy and have no problems. I've had them on other cars too as the insurance they have is brill against damaged tyres. I've had a few replaced from sidewall cuts etc

Have you checked tyre pressures, tracking etc?

Pressures set per handbook, its having a new t.r.e, link rod and tracking carried out tomorrow as it happens.

As it said its fine in the dry doesn't pull either way, the wheels slightly out but not massively, just no grip so it seems when the roads wet or damp.

Why would having different tyres on each corner affect the transfer box? surely all the diffs would handle the size difference?

I didn't know tyre sizes effected landys but yrs ago subarus and cars like the cavalier and calibra 4x4 used to **** the transfer boxes regular. Manufactures at the time washed their hands of the warranty work saying it was down to front and rear tyre differences loading up the center diff/transfer box.
I've never really agreed with it as even 4wd cars wear the front tyres quicker than the backs so from day one the transfer box is being loaded up

i can't tell you the mechanical explanation but different tyres will certainly affect ABS, EBD and TC...and that i can explain, also in all the literature i've seen using different tyres on a 4x4 with center diff is unrecommended

because they don't measure all the same OD. even though different manufacture will have the same size numbers( 265/75/16) for example there OD or circumference measurement will be different, close, but different that is the problem.

I don't think the transfer box on a Disco will be affected as it's doing exactly what it's designed to do ie allowing the front wheels to travel at a different speed to the backs. It's different with viscous couplings like Freelander 1s had, and possibly the other vehicles quoted.

But I defer to Fery's views on the electronics.

See my thread about this

But for now, take off the cloth cover and put some penetrating oil into the lever, where the rod comes out of the rectangular bit.

You may neen to remove the panel if so 5mm x 16mm rivets

it would ,but the diff is a very basic design ,if you saw one youd be surprised how it able to transmit the drive it does, so the least time its operating as a diff the better

Is it not almost always acting as a diff anyway?
Unless driving in a dead straight line on a dead smooth surface, it will be diffing.
