K&N type cone filters or paper filters, whats the preference? ever since putting a cone filter on it seems to black smoke when "lugging" up from pull away or when the turbo cuts in going up hill. I have done the necessary backing off the fuel pump, but is the filter restricting the airflow too much? i have cleaned and oiled the filter using K&N products. Should i clean the filter and not oil it? Or should i bin it and go back to standard filters. By the way its a 200tdi engine in a ninety.

run without filter and see.

are you over oiling, if anything it should be leaner and stand a bit of turning up of the pump with a k&n filter, it is a foam type???
AFAIK paper ones are disposable, its the foam ones that are washable/reoilable??

Hmmmm maybe i am oiling the wrong type then its this type of filter, am i oiling the wrong sort. I remember from my motox days and cars that had twin 45's with foam sock filters on that we used to oil them so have i got this wrong?

are you using K&N stuff when you clean the filter? and following there instructions?

Yes, I have the K&N service kit which includes the cleaner and oiling solutions. I have just been on the K&N site to confirm it is the washable type and it is. So maybe there is another reason why it started smoking a bit. At least with the K&N fitted i can here the turbo winding up so there must be better air intake.

The question is though, would an aftermarket filter like the K&N generally be better than the stock air intake system? It sounds like it should be, if so i will persivere with it and sort out the fuelling problems.

The thing i never mentioned was that when i bought the landrover it had a carbon canister filter on it much like a K&N inside it (cone type gauze filter). Well when i came to do some work on the engine i had to take this filter off and found that it had detached inside so in effect was not filtering at all and was loose. So in my haste i rushed out and stuck a K&N on.

Well what i am thinking is that the previouse owner had tuned the pump when there was no filtration on it, so as soon as i put one one it choked up, well thats my theory anyway. Hopefully no real damage cause i dont know how long its been like it.

all are washable according to there sire was just there
