I have a range rover 4.6 v8 99 thor engine...
Can anybody recommend a good air filter? A standard air filter or a K and N performance filter?

Any help would be much appreciated!

:)

I can only say that I fitted the K & N filter about 18 months ago and have not regeretted it. Read the spec on it.

K & N filters do a good job. However they are oil soaked filters and clog up, then need washing and re oiling every so often. At £40.00 for the filter then £10.00 for the re oiling kit every year or so are quite expensive. They are a bit of a gimic if you ask me, a new standard filter every few thousand miles is a lot cheaper. And does just the same job.

I have K&N filters on both my Rover and my Motorcycle. The information that comes with them says they only need cleaning every 50,000 miles. To date the one on the bike has been on for 25,000 miles without much more than a check at service time and quick blow over with compressed air to remove any loose particles. The RR one has only been on for 6 months. Buying the cleaning stuff for use on 2 vehicles and following the manufactures instructions must be cheaper in the long run. No?

I would assume that is based on road use...not greenlaning, off-roading, trailing and the like...the additional mud, dust, dirt, water et al will take its toll on K&N's hence the Wammers advice to clean and oil it every year, if not sooner...

Indeed that's correct as the instructions K&N provide state exactly that. For me though that isn't an issue with the type of driving I do. How penny pinching do you want to get considering the thirst of a V8 which means they are far from an economical machine in the first place?

Think a fiver once a year for a standard filter is best bet to be honest.
The after market accesories industry makes billions a year selling things that people don't really need. If you believe all the bumph, spending a few hundred quid will give you a car with 500bhp that does 80miles to the gallon. :D:D:D

So what exactly does the K & N do or give you that the standard filter does not?

Nothing other than being reusable. All I have to do on both my car and bike is clean them every so often. I concluded that in the long run it would be more cost effective. That's all.

I don't chop and change cars and bike very often. I try and get my monies worth out of them. Yes a K&N costs much more to buy than OEM. After a few years it's paid for its self, then add in a second machine that also has a K&N which you share the cost of the cleaning material between and you can (in the long run) save money.

It's all academic really as you well know that if cost was an issue we'd never buy a Range Rover of any sort in the first place.
