I have just been out to fit my new cam shaft position sensor and my new "cyclone breather jobby".
The cam shaft position sensor was straight forward, but I didn't get the cyclone oil separator thing done.
Haynes says the air cleaner cover is held on with 5 Allen screws. The front three are Allen screws on mine, but the back two are security screws, hex stars with dimples in the middle. I have two sets of bits that look as though they should fit and I found one that fits the one on the passenger side, but none of them fit the one on the driver's side.

Does anyone have any ideas which bit I need for the driver's side one?

Alas and alack as they say, some rascal may have changed the screws. :confused:

The air cleaner cover has 5 identical screws - or at least it should have.

I use the long-reach Allan key (supplied with my Synergy2 tuning box) to slacken them, but they are not possible to take out completely, being held captive in the cover.

Somebody has done a botch job I fear. :mad:

The front three are correct, but as you say someone has replaced the rear ones with the incorrect item ( and not even two identical incorrect ones!). I may have to end up doing a botch job to get one of them out and then replace them with proper Allen headed screws

Are they both security torx? They are 5 pointed with a hole in the middle for the centre-pin.

Normal torx are 6 pointed.

Rover Ron sends a full set of security torx with every Synergy unit.

They are stamped 'Draper' and cost plenty at Halfords.

It's hard to see the one I can't get a bit to fit, but the bit that fits the one on the passenger side is 6 pointed with a hole. May be I need to go to Halfords and find some 5 pointed ones
 
Are you positive you are going at the right bolts because they are captive which means to bodge it then you would have to force ably remove them from the cover - why would anyone do that!?

Get a mirror and torch and check - they are difficult to find first time.

I did have a torch and they are exactly where Haynes and the photos on here show them to be. But, yes, you are right, it's worth double checking before I go and buy some 5 point torx bits. I'll have another look in the morning with a mirror as well as a torch

Are you sure your not trying to undo the Maff sensor.
I only ask, because I nearly did the same.
I am short and had to stand on the front wheel to find the right screws.

Like I said in an earlier post, I was sure I had the right screws, one at each end of the rear of the air filter cover, but I will get a torch and my mirror on a stick tool out in the morning and check again.
 
the maf on the td4 is held on by 5 point security (pin in the middle) torx screws so unless you are really unlucky and whoever bodged it happened to have some spare ones of these you'll probably find they are 6 point security torx screws

They aren't 6 point...I have tried my six point bits and none of them fit. As I have said, twice before, I will double check that I am attacking the right screws and if needed buy some five point bits and try again.

and I promise to come back and report the out come.

I'm thinking now, if I have to but 5 point bits to sort it there will be no point in refitting the correct screws as I will have the tools for the wrong ones....
 
Hi , Richard press a ball of blue tack over the said torx screws to get a impression , it will show 5 or 6 etc hope this helps :)

good call Ian...the op might find out which screw he's got then and stop blaming us for it being the wrong one.......:mad:

I wasn't blaming you for it being the wrong one. I started off by saying it wasn't the right one and looking for suggestions as to what it was...and thanks to everyone's help I expect it's a 5 point one. If I can find some blue tack I can check for sure before I buy any more tools...although I do like buying tools:)
