I see this truck is back on the market, (last on here back in 2008) and I would have been interested except that I have now spent the money on something else, although I don't like it being pre-tdi.

The real question is does anyone know how they got both hydraulics and the agri pto? for most of us its one or the other. That is something I really would like to bolt onto the existing 110. :scratching_chin:
 
Id imagine one pump is direct off the engine . There is a rare underdrive pto so I believe, Ive seen pic of the series version so may a coiler version exists
 
The easy way is drive rear pto from top of transfer box, and fit bottom pto housing and use to drive hyd pump.

I did similar ( top for o/d & bottom for hyd winch) on a series 2 88" V8 i built in early 70's HTSH
 
If the terminology is all agriculturl then he could be refering to the rear PTO as the power take of shaft that tractors have fitted and the hydralics being spool valves, in which case the truck will have been rigged up to drive something like a mower that would be controled by the hydralic spool valves (moving it up down and left and right ect ect and then the PTO shaft spinning the cutter...

I may be wrong...
 
On reflection i may have just read your question wrong and completely answered pointlessly.. not sure.. if i have, i apologise and i will get my coat :behindsofa:
 
Well thanks for the input so far, if you look at the engine bay shot there is no sign of a belt driven pump where it would normally sit, and I have never seen a bottom pto for a defender....... has anyone???
 
They had a cover story and article on agrovers in LRM in the last 6 months or so. They did have some info on its set up but my copy is long gone.
 
to get the power to the back end, you need to forget everything you know on land rover ptos and the way they are set up. the drive to the rear is a live drive system which means that whatever ground speed or gear your in the pto needs to spin at a constant 540rpm, which in the case of an ag is 2000rpm. the pto speed in a vehicle with one off the transfer box can not perform this task.
power for the hydraulics including the pto , spools and linkage is taken from a hydraulic pump and distributed via electro hydraulic spool valves to the required area. the system runs at 2500psi and has a 56l/min flow rate.
as for a tdi in an agrover, ooooow now that would be a bit scarey on the road. the 2.5d is ok for a top speed of 65 ish but any faster would be brown pants time, especially the way they handle. could do with the extra tdi power for normal driving as the engine dies easily on hills, but thats not suprising when you concider the extra weight it has to haul around. there heavy bas###ds especially with one on your boot !!!!!!!

Well I've found an old LRM article 2006 which shows a pic with a hydraulic distribution block next to the probable regular PTO pump arrangement. Where I don't quite follow Davey's script is how, (ie from which part of the transmission, and with what hardware) the 'live drive' is achieved?? It does sound as if you have had a play with one tho, of that I am a bit envious!
 
if you wanted to run a pto off the rear of lt230 ,its driven form input gear at which ever gear ratio your in ie in 4th it would be engine speed ,you could get under drives that bolted in place of lt230 sump ,or run pto off hydraulic motor ,a live drive pto is driven from engine direct so still turns if you press clutch and stop forwad movement ,so do the same on a landy you would need engine driven hyd pump

dont know what the picture is showing you but the pump that runs all the goodies is in the lower rear engine bay area. what the picture may show is part of the pto clutch as well as the spool valve chest. the main hydraulic pump runs the different hydraulic aplications via the electricaly controled spool valve chest.
 
The picture (LRM 2006) just shows the vehicle (same one by the way), without its rear tub, from the left hand side. Poking out from under the back of the cab is probably what you term the spool valve chest. Its not a close up and I am not sure where the pto clutch would be but I am guessing its not visible. So is the Agrover pto hydraulic then? Surely not if it has its own clutch. Did they put a siamese gearbox in the bellhousing? straight through for the transmission and offset for the pto? Are there two hydraulic systems, as James suggests? Also James I have searched and come up with zip for sump/bottom pto on the lt230, do you have any leads on that one?
 
first sentance of my first post - forget everything you know about land rover pto systems and outputs - its nothing like them. the only thing that is attached to the transfer box is the pto clutch unit holder which is a drop plate and is also held on via the inspection plate bolts.
a sandwich plate is in between the engine and bellhousing which drives a big hydraulic pump all the time the engine is running. this powers the 3 point linkage and hydraulics for the spool valves at the rear ie the female couplings where you would attach a male fitting of a hydraulic hose.
on the main hydraulic pump is a splined output shaft which constantly turns a shaft to the pto clutch unit. this unit then , by way of a hydraulic valve in the cab, then sends drive to the rear splined output shaft ie the one you put a pto shaft on. an awfull lot more powerfull than any land rover pto system that runs out the back of a transfer box. :D:D:D:D
 
Many thanks Davey, I was happy to forget what I knew but you didn't give a lot else to go on! Now we can finally imagine the set-up, I don't suppose you have a spare unit kicking about though??
 
non lying around. nearly 2k just for the clutch pack alone never mind all the shafts. the hydraulics cost 4.5k + vat nearly 25 years ago when they were built. now its not a problem getting the middle bits but you would also need the live drive unit and pump at the front , the various valves needed and the rear pto drive unit and cradle to sit round the heavy duty axle. i was going to upload some photos but after reading what it takes to upload them, my time would be better spent getting the combine ready . send an pm and ill try and send you some photos if i get time.:smash::smash:
