Hi all,

New to the LR community with a new purchase last night after wanting one for about a year, sold my Aston Martin Vantage to join the proper boys out in the field.

For just over £5k I've picked up a '93 Defender 90 County SW Turbo D in a dark red, she's a beauty with loads of chassis work done and great interior and exterior. Engine we think sounds a bit rattly as well as the gearbox and the turbo has some exhaust soot around it. Likely need a new turbo and a large engine service - nothings ever spot on though is it and it would be rude not to have some work to carry out on it! I'll post a proper picture on Thursday when I pick it up!

Cheers - Toby

Hi all,

I've now picked up the defender and what can I say - I love it to bits. Drives like a proper oldschool English motor - apart from a leaky turbo it's in great condition and I've already stripped it down to have treadplates and side guards all re-sprayed.

A question that I'm dying to discover the answer to though is - how do I keep this thing maintained? Would anyone recommend a weekly, monthly check or service that I do to any component? Unfortunately I don't know enough about the 200 tdi to know what to look out for, to help out with this it's a 183k 1993 200tdi in a 90.
Any help on this would be great - cheers all!

Welcome to lz, Toby! :)

I would suggest getting the leaky turbo looked at ASAP, that can destroy your engine completely.

Then go through it, change all the fluids, engine, trans box, gearbox, axles brake fluid, PSF. Record mileage, and repeat at intervals as in manual.
Then change fuel filter, air filter, and check hoses for collapse internally.

And for interest, it is not a Defender90. It is a Ninety with a 200Tdi retrofitted.

Excellent thanks Turboman.......

Another question - my turbo (as mentioned above) is leaking exhaust fumes so no doubt this needs a new one. Can anyone recommend which one to go for and where to buy from? Would paddocks be a good place to pick one up from?
