Hi All,

I recently bought a Discovery TD5(99) and all has been well so far. The only problem is ( and i noticed it only once driving on the motorway) is that it handles like a big jelly once at speed. At first i thought perhaps something was wrong with the steering? Then upon further investigation i noticed that the ACE pump is gone and the reservoir has had the pipes removed. Im fine with that if it has been done properly, but is that why it handles like the Titanic? Is there a way to tell if its been done correctly i.e none ACE anti roll bars etc. that i can see from underneath? on the drivers side, underneath but in front of the back wheel there are 3 plugs plugged into nothing. Just to add, its still on air bags and they all work as they should. The ABS and traction control all work and otherwise the car is in exceptionally good nick for its age and appears to have been maintained regardless of cost. I have MOT's dating back 10 years and lots of reciepts etc. Can i fix this handling? is the body roll normal? it feels dangerous!
Thanks Guys...

sounds ok apart from no anti roll bars ,plugs wre for ace block obviously removed, it will roll about without roll bars ,not difficult to fit ,youd need front and rear bars plus links ,bushes and brackets

In theory, if the ACE system is disabled, the actuators lock solid and so act as an anti-roll bar. However, when mine went, they didn't lock solid because the actuators themselves had rusted and were leaking.

I ripped them off an fitted genuine LR anti-roll bars. The fronts are the same diameter, but the rears are in two diameters - a thin one for non SLS and a thick one for SLS. As I was going to lift my D2 and fit a rooftent I fitted the thicker SLS rear ARB to mine even though its a coil spec vehicle, and its been spot on ever since.

The bars are something like (from memory, so don't treat this as gospel) front 19mm, rear SLS 32mm rear non SLS 22mm. Its something like that anyway.

Thanks guys,
Ive had a good look around and it does have anti roll bars that seem to be none ACE (no hydraulics etc). Im going to get it checked out to confirm that they are all as they should be. Could it be the steering? i have no leaks or anything but its very loose feeling from about 10 oclock to 2 oclock on the wheel.

I believe that the steering box can be adjusted up to a point, but the steering column does have U/Js which eventually wear, so a couple of things to check there too.

As ^^^^ next step is to check the steering box for adjustment. Official procedure is here -

I don't bother removing the drag link, don't think thats entirely necessary ;)
