AFAIK R12 is only banned as far as it's manufacture is concerned.
I think you'll find it is still permissable to use *reclaimed* R12.
If you can find any!
With an old R12 system it's probably better to have the system converted to
use R134a.
From what I've read, all the alternatives solutions are not as satisfactory.
They all seem to need more frequent regassing.
