Trying to remove my rear axle on a 200tdi however I cannot get the a frame balljoint nut undone, I know from a previous thread I hijacked that it is a 30mm nut, however it does not seem that a socket can be used so it is spanner time. I bought correct spanner drowned nut in WD40 but cannot get it to budge
It appears that the nut it so rotten that there is nothing left of it, any ideas how I could remove it???

You could try a nut splitter or apply some heat and a hoofing great chistle and lump hammer or take if the 'A' frame with the axle if thats possible and that'll give you more room to work.

I know these only go upto 22mm but there are larger ones available and I've used them a lot in my past life of a R.E.M.E mechanic so I know they work without damaging the thread.

Sounds like you're down to a lump hammer and a sharp chisel.
Doubt you'll get an angle grinder in there.

we used a forklift ,a lot of heat ,big fook off spanner an a big scaff bar an even more sweary words

Does a blow torch give enough heat or does it have to be oxy? Not sure I could get in with nut splitter, Land rover kindly made sure there was no room around it.

Had the same problem on my 110. I removed the ball joint bracket from the a-frame and took it out with the axle. Then it was a relatively simple job to remove the mounting from the top of the axle thus making the nut accesible and easy to remove in a vice. Once you can get at the nut properly you'l probably find it's not even particularly tight.

Hi have undone the 2 nuts that appear told the ball\joint to the frame, but the long bolt is siezed in. looks like frame and everything is coming out then and this was meant to be simple.

I had to take mine to my local Indy - they had to use a 30 ton press and a boltcutter to remove the A frame to release the balljoint carrier.

This sounds like one of Land rovers cunning plans to make life awkward, whats wrong with a bit of rust protection on these motors especially in really awkward places.

You'll no doubt have to remove the upper link brackets from the chassis crossmember as it's impossible to get the bolts out of the bushes at the front of the a-frame due to the chassis rails being in the way. I had to take a grinder to mine even then it wasn't easy due to restricted access. This is one of those jobs you wish you hadn't started so you'll want to do a proper job of it using quality parts so you don't end up doing it again in a years time.

think I will take land rover a pot of marine grease on my way past, atleast with some of that on the right parts I would have stood a chance of getting this job done.

and to top it all off I have had day off today and now it is persisting down and I got no cover to work in.
